According to the Social Progress Imperative:
Social progress is the ability of a society to meet the basic human needs of its citizens, establish the pillars that enable citizens and communities to improve and sustain the quality of their lives, and create the conditions for all individuals to reach their full potential.

This definition is the result of an in-depth review and synthesis of academic and practical literature covering various topics of development. The structure of the Social Progress Index is centered on three distinct but interrelated questions, which together provide insight into the level of social progress:

Does a country provide for its people's most essential needs?

Are the building blocks in place for individuals and communities to enhance and sustain wellbeing?

Is there opportunity for all individuals to reach their full potential?
